About the event

The Area Agency on Aging invites community caregivers to participate in The Caregiver Academy. Scheduled to begin on April 6, 2020, the free six-part workshop will be held every Monday from 10am-11:30am, until it concludes on May 11, 2020. The workshop aims to assist family and community caregivers in developing the skills needed to manage in-home care.

The Caregiver Academy assists caregivers in learning essential skills for managing family care environments. Participants also learn local resources, services and more. Through participation in the six workshops, family caregivers will learn about finding caregiver resources, recognizing compassion fatigue and building resilience, setting good care boundaries, family dynamics and how to involve the family, coping with difficult behaviors, and in-home and facility-based care choices.

“We provide a hands-on training and group support environment in a classroom setting. This creates one-on-one training and interaction,” said Kristina Raner of the Area Agency on Aging, “We firmly believe this helps caregivers to provide excellent care to their loved ones and to themselves.”

The Caregiver Academy is a skill-development program. Caregivers attend weekly 90-minute sessions with a small group of caregivers. Caregivers learn how to manage family care, including how to hold family meetings, track behavior, transition to new levels of care and a variety of other content. Each participant receives a free Managing Care Guide, resources and other materials.
